Journaling is something that I am really trying to implement this year. It’s proven to help you achieve your goals, reduce stress and anxiety, help with mental health, and overall, it’s just a way to keep you grounded.
I tend to journal in the mornings because it helps me set the intention for the day. If I don’t have time in the morning, I still journal at night as a way to reflect on the day. Usually, I write what I did that day, express gratitude, reflect on what I can do better the next day, or just write down my thoughts. However, sometimes it’s hard to figure out what to write about. This is when I refer to using journal prompts.
So, here’s a list of 10 journal prompts that can help you in improving yourself, especially when you don’t know what to write about.
1. What am I passionate about?
Now, I get that that’s a loaded question. Is it asking about work-life, personal, things I like to do in my free time, how I drive myself to achieve… what?!? There are so many possibilities, right?
Exactly! Since it’s such a broad question, you can answer all of the above and more. Remember, there are no rules to journaling! Anything that helps you think or reflect is key. So, put that pen to paper and just start writing!
2. What currently brings the most happiness and joy into my life?
Most of these prompts are pretty straightforward. What do you look forward to every day? What brings you happiness anytime you think about it? It can be something small, like your favorite drink at Starbucks. Describe it! Talk about why it makes you happy.
3. What are 3 qualities you love about yourself?
Remember, self-love is really important. It’s important to not only show gratitude to the things in your life, but also to yourself for getting you this far!
4. What is your favorite book/movie and why?
Everyone has a favorite book or movie (but if you don’t, that’s okay! talk about your top 3 books/movies). So talk about it! Why do you love it? Is it the writing? The characters? The visuals?
5. What are your goals for the next 5 years?
Now, this is another broad question. The beautiful thing is that you can go as in-depth or surface level as you want. Journaling is for your own self-growth, so take it seriously and really think about what you want to achieve!
6. How do you prioritize these 3 things: money, family, and health?
You can talk about your rankings currently in your life, and whether or not you want to change them. Write about how you will make changes, or write about why you think your current ranking is best.
7. What does your ideal morning/night routine look like?
I cannot stress this enough: morning and night routines are the ultimate key to being productive and being your best self. It took me years to figure out what I love to do in the mornings to create the best foundation for my day, and what to do at night to prepare for a new day.
I will be making a blog post and a TikTok going more in depth about this in the future, so make sure to follow! (@sscorpiodiaries)
8. Write a letter to your future self.
I love this prompt! It’s a perfect way to “ask” your future self about the goals you set for yourself. I would write it and “seal” the letter by sticking a post-It note on it with the date that you can open it. Or, to make it fancier, you can write the whole letter on a separate sheet of paper and glue it in an actual envelope containing the letter inside! I think this is such a great way to add other elements to your journal!
9. What are your current favorite songs?
This is another really fun prompt, and you can reuse it every month! I would make a list of about 10 songs long, and write what you love about it or some lyrics that really speak to you!
10. Write your life story.
Whew. That is a TOUGH one. Had to do it for the last prompt 🙂
Again, you can go as in detail as you want. You can write about some prominent memories you’ve had throughout your life, important events, or just random conversations that you remember. You can write about things that shaped you into who you are today. Bonus point: write about your future too! This is a great way to manifest your dreams; write them in the present tense. For example: I have a great following online with outstanding people! (something I hope to write one day :))
And there you have it! These 10 prompts are sure to get you out of a writing slump; trust me, I’ve been there! I hope you like these prompts, and make sure to leave a comment and follow if you want more! I’ll definitely be posting more prompt ideas in the future! And if you’re interested in learning more about my perfected morning and night routine, stay tuned!
