Believe it or not, night routines are the foundation for a perfect next day. Even if you have a good morning routine, it’s essential to have a night routine to prepare for your morning. Sounds a little complicated, but when you think about it, it makes sense.
If you read my morning routine post, then you know that I have 6 steps that set my day up for success. Similarly, I have 6 steps to wind down and set the next day up for success.
An important note: I don’t use any electronics 30 minutes before I go to bed and 30 minutes after I wake up.
1. Freshen up.
I usually start my night routine at around 10:00 every night, unless I go out. If I start it later, then I adjust my sleep schedule and morning schedule accordingly too, that way I always have at least 7 hours of sleep (of course there are some nights where I don’t get that much sleep, but for the most part I try to get 7).
Freshening up can be up to interpretation; it could be taking a shower or changing into your pajamas. I tend to shower in the morning so I either take another shower or just change into my PJs depending on the day. And make sure to put your “outside clothes” away! Don’t leave them around your space. This leads to the next step.
2. Clean your space.
Put your dishes away, clean up clutter around your room, fold your blankets. Any “mess” you made over the day, clean it up! That way your space is clean for the upcoming day. You’re essentially just making everything easier for future you, so do it to help yourself!
3. Skincare and Haircare.
Super super important. I do this every night without fail, no matter what time it is. It’s my way of winding down, just how putting on makeup helps me get ready for the day. I don’t have a super in-depth skincare routine, just washing my face, putting on moisturizer, and a serum. For haircare, I use Castor oil and massage it into my hair and scalp.

4. Set Up a Journal Prompt, Get Water, and Make a To-Do List.
This step is the step of tasks. I usually set up the journal prompt the night before I actually answer it (I answer it as part of my morning routine). I also create a to-do list of things I want to accomplish the next day. I’m a list lover, so I do this because I think it’s super satisfying to cross something off of your list. Lastly, I fill up a glass of water and leave it on my bedside table to drink in the morning.
Again, the night routine is there to set up the perfect next day. Half of the things I do at night is to make sure that my morning routine goes smoothly. For example, if I don’t get my glass of water at night and put it on my side table, then I might not drink water in the morning, which changes my morning. Even though it’s a small change, it can make a big difference in my day.
5. Read.
If you’re anything like me, you love to read. But sometimes, the day is so busy and you don’t have any time to read. That’s why I included reading in my night routine because it’s so important to me. It can be a self-improvement! book if you would like, but honestly, I tend to read fiction because that’s what I enjoy!

6. Set Your Alarm and Sleep Earlier.
I am a very deep sleeper, so I set 2 alarms and put it across the room. That way, I have to physically get out of bed to turn it off. If you’ve tried that method and it hasn’t worked for you, then try out a sunrise alarm that wakes you up with light! I personally want to try one. I’ll have a blog post on tips to wake up early, so stay tuned for that!
You got it! If you want a good morning (which starts with waking up early), then you’re going to have to go to bed earlier. I try to go to bed by 11, which honestly isn’t even that early! You can adjust this to how early you want to wake up, but I would recommend having at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Remember, rest is crucial, so don’t sleep on it (wink wink).
And that’s everything! That is my ideal and perfected night routine. If I do all of these things, I am basically guaranteed to have a great morning and a great day. If this seems like too much, take it easy and try each step one at a time. You can also tailor it to your liking; for example, if you don’t like to read, then fill that time with another hobby! Just try not to incorporate electronics because you will sleep better without them.
